By Philip Harris Wherever one turns, basic Christian precepts and dogmas are under attack. From the film THE SECRET, The DaVinci Code, the History and National Geographic TV channels, the Jesus Papers, Gospel of Judas, Gospel of Mary, and the recently released novel, Waking God, the very foundations of the Christian body of churches have been forced into the trenches. Long held beliefs and myths are being exposed and open to close examination, forcing even the most faithful to question the true history of their religions. While there have always been doubters, skeptics and blasphemers, the tenacity of the current onslaught is relentless. The texts of the suppressed Gnostics have finally made their way into the limelight, and their version of Christianity is far different than that portrayed in the carefully selected Church canons. Fundamental questions are being explored. Was Jesus married? Did he have children? Did he really die on the cross? Was there ever intent to truly form an organized church? Was Jesus even Jewish and did he belong to the secret society known as the Essenes? Did Nazareth exist or was Jesus a Nazarene? Have religious authoritys purposely altered or hidden great spiritual truths? Have secret societies preserved a bloodline or perhaps the teachers DNA? Was Judas, in fact, the greatest of the disciples? History shows that from its inception, the Church came under fire. The difference between then, and now, is that in times gone by, the Church wielded totalitarian powers. It was able to suppress dissent at every turn. The Gnostics were ostracized, the heretics burned at the stake, competing religions destroyed or co-opted, and non-believers had to contend with relentless crusades and holy wars. Things have changed. The long arm of the Church has been reduced in size and power by the Age of Information. No longer in control of this information network and lacking the backing of power-seeking monarchies, the dissemination of alternative versions of church histories can no longer be censored. Beginning in the 1920s, works by such men as H. Spencer Lewis portrayed a totally different version of the Passion and the nature of a man called Jesus. Lewis claimed in several works that Jesus was an initiate of a secret society and that rumors of his death were greatly exaggerated. Many of these ideas have been supported by the Dead Sea Scrolls and other documents. No longer in control of censoring its own history, the Church now finds itself on the cusp of a new age of skepticism and doubt. Most of these ideas have been around for centuries, but suppression and censorship have prevented them from being popularized. Is this siege justified? Is the quest for a new Holy Grail warranted? This observer would say that these efforts are long over due. Christian history and that of most organized religions has been one of blood and deceit. While the Messenger of Christian doctrine can easily lay claim to insights on the true nature of life, much of his message has been perverted, hidden, censored and rewritten. This is not just a Christian issue, all of the major avatars who sought to enlighten humanity have had there messages equally distorted. When one examines the similarities of the basic tenets of all great spiritual teachers, it cannot help but raise the question as to why they have caused so much divisiveness. Almost every organized religion has been the root cause of war, human divisiveness, and human misery. The numbers are open for debate but the range of deaths resulting from religious wars range from several hundred million to a billion. Growing sectarian violence in the Muslim world and current tensions between religions only had weight to this argument. The tragedy of loss of life aside, although not downplayed, is the fact that most major organized religions remove the notion of responsibility from human thought. The concepts of do as you will and all will be forgiven as long as you join my church have given humanity a false belief that we do not reap what we sow. The reward of heaven has driven mankind to the extremes of his nature and forms the basis of the worlds current ills. Terrorism, global rape, the struggle of the poor and homeless, and the lack of basic human freedoms can point their fingers at religions as the root cause of their problems. Why? Because we have been taught that our destiny, our gains and our ills are totally out of our control. If we follow the dictates of religious dogma there is a chance that we might be saved. If we do not, it is certain that we face damnation. We do not have to take responsibility for our actions because if we repent and accept the notion that someone else has died for our sins, then we are off the hook. If we kill in the name of God, all is forgiven. It is okay to stand by and witness genocide as long as we attend our churches and pray for their souls. If something wicked this way comes, it is because we have not prayed enough or filled the plate to overflowing. If something great happens, it is not because of human achievement or the power of our own will, it is because Gods grace descended upon us. Does this mean that there are not well meaning members of these churches, mosques or temples? Of course not! But as long as people believe that they do not control their present or future, they will not act responsibly towards each other or towards the environment. Dr. John Demartini indicated that mans number one fear, that which keeps us from creating our own reality, is the belief that we are breaking the moral and ethical standards of some perceived established authority. In this case, that authority has been religious institutions that claim superior dogma and superior interpretation of the words of the worlds greatest spiritual masters. If there is a siege, it is one of the human spirit seeking truths long suppressed and hidden in an attempt to break down the walls of religious hypocrisy. It is said, All that is hidden will be revealed. This revelation will be one that contains the concept that none will be left behind as humanity seeks a greater and deeper understanding of the Universal truths that guide our existence. Strategies to teach all children are practiced. As parents, we found several strategies helpful. Parenting strategies are general ways of understanding and observing family life and the behavior of children. When you reprimand children, exclusions, and detentions are recorded as strategies that are not affected when trying to improve the behavior of school children. Parenting strategies and behavior management strategies are also effective. The relationship between disciplinary strategies and aggression in preschoolers does not always work in the best interest of the child. Plan appropriate teaching strategies to promote children’s growth and development. Most teachers who implemented strategies from the beginning and create good habits and support system change the behavior of children. It is worth considering whether the approach into childrens behavior is a practical approach. By Daniel Wadleigh There is an often misunderstood part of pricing that can seriously damage the profit potential. It is the effects of the costs of marketing a product or service. As an example, many manufacturers commit 20% of price to marketing; certain consumer products which are quite competitive (e.g. laundry soap) may use up to 65% of price towards advertising to stimulate the marketplace. Contractors allocate generally from nothing to 10% of their pricing to marketing (media ads). Marketing costs can consist of: 1. Generating stimulus to end-users (leads) 2. Commissions on direct sales (sales professional compensation) 3. Commissions on sales to distribution. I once stumbled upon a sale, quite by accident. All I had to do was find a contractor to install what I had sold, once a price was negotiated and agreed upon. The contractor commented, “I pay my own sales people 10%,” as an offer to me. My reply was, “I generated the lead and the sale and I should get 20%, or I’ll find another contractor who wants the business.” The point is, he didn’t clearly understand the value (or costs) of generating a “sellable” lead. He was used to “getting” most of his leads for free from referrals – which is fine, as much as it works. But, if they aren’t calling you, you have to go to them – and that costs money. As long as you have leads (that close) coming in, it doesn’t matter how they got there. So, plan on spending (allocating) funds for marketing costs, and reflect those costs in the price. If your marketing costs decrease, either enjoy higher profit margins or lower the price to your customers. Your net margin can be 5% or 15%, it doesn’t matter – as long as your volume is high enough to provide the profits that you need or want. Most business people don’t figure enough margin to cover vehicle maintenance, call-backs, marketing costs, etc. into their pricing. They fear “pricing themselves out of the market.” As elsewhere stated, it is better to enhance your value than to “cheapen” your price. There are thousands of products that “cost” more, but have better value. Do you buy from licensed businesses, or otherwise? Do you always buy from the “cheapest” supplier? Why not? Well, that is the same argument for you to not be the “cheapest” vendor – enhance your value instead. One ‘Value” is having personnel that customers want to do business with more than with competitors’. It is very important to have likable personnel. Have you ever gone out of your way to buy from someone you liked doing business with, even when the same goods were available closer, and even “cheaper?” If any of your employees have market appeal, hang on to them. If it costs you more to keep them, consider it a marketing cost! Find some examples of occasions on which you paid more (knowingly) for a similar value, and determine why you did it. By Jim Bruce Growing hybrid grapes is becoming more popular for wine and eating. This popularity comes from the fact that hybrid grapes can be grown in areas where the traditional European grapes cannot survive. It also comes about because more and more people are growing grapes in their backyard to produce their own vintage wine. What are hybrid grapes? To answer this question, we must look back in history about 100 years to when the European vineyards were being decimated by the phylloxera louse that had been brought from North America. The European grape species, Vitis vinifera, is extremely susceptible to this louse. Vineyard after vineyard was succumbing to this imported pest as well as to grape diseases that had also come from America. But Native American species of grapes had evolved with the pest and were resistant to its attacks on the vine’s roots. In an effort to save the wine industry in France, some individuals began to cross breed the European and American species to obtain new varieties that had the wine characteristics of the European grapes and the resistance to the phylloxera louse and other diseases that the American grape species possessed. It is from these breeding programs that the original hybrid grapes were grown. At first, the grape varieties produced were no better than their American parents. But as time has gone on, more complex hybrids have been made and the quality of the grapes has increased. Today, wines made from some hybrid grape varieties even rival the wines made in California and other traditional wine producing areas. The way you grow hybrid grapes depends upon the varieties you choose. Some varieties’ growth habit resemble their American parents while others grow like their European parents. And then there are those that are in-between in their growth habit. The growth habit of the variety will dictate what type of trellising system you will use to grow them. It also will dictate how the vines are pruned. European varieties and hybrids that take after them tend to grow upright. These varieties will need a vertical shoot positioning trellis system that allows you to tie up the shoots as they grow upward. American varieties and hybrids that resemble them have a growth habit that droops. These vines are usually trained to a high wire about six feet off the ground and the shoots are allowed to grow downward over the growing season. You can find a hybrid variety that will grow in almost anywhere in the United States. Alaska is about the only state you won’t find one adapted to. The right hybrid grape variety for your location is dependent upon the percentage of native species found in the cross. Varieties adapted to northern locations tend to have a high percentage of the native Vitis riparia that lives in areas where the winters can go as low as -35F. Southern varieties generally have Vitis aestivalis in their background if from the southeast or other native species if found in areas like Texas. Grape hybrids often are known by only the breeder’s number. They may be called S.V 5-276 or S. 7053. Only the best of hybrids have a true name, such as Foch or Seyval. These named varieties have shown their worth over many years and are usually being used to make wines commercially where a name is important on the label. Growing hybrid grapes may mean having to deviate from the traditional grape growing methods. Some grape hybrids produce way too much fruit because of hybrid vigor. You will have to remove some of the fruit early in the growing season to prevent them from over-bearing and succumbing to premature death. Each variety will behave slightly different. You will have to get to know the grape varieties you grow and adjust accordingly. The big question is which varieties to grow? The answer to this depends on where you live. You must buy varieties that are adapted to your region. Some hybrid grape varieties mature their fruit in 135-140 days while others need 170 days or more to get ripe. The goal is to have ripe fruit so be sure that you’re not growing a long season variety in a short season. Hybrid grapes also vary in how winter hardy they are. Make sure that you get a very hardy variety if you live where the winters are cold. Or a southern adapted variety if you live where there’s hot humid summers and long growing seasons. Winter hardiness is not the concern under those conditions. What you are going to use the fruit for is also a concern when picking the right variety. Most hybrids have been developed to make wine. But there are varieties for eating too. Most of the grape varieties that you buy locally at a greenhouse or nursery are eating varieties. You will need to go online to find wine varieties for sale. If you’re passion is to grow grape vines in your backyard either for wine or eating, I suggest that you look into hybrid grapes. These have been bred to get the best of the tastes of the European grapes combined with the resistances and winter hardiness of the native grape species. Without filial piety, it is like a tree without its root or the water without the source. It is not easy to describe what our parents have done for us over the years. The care and the love deeper than the deepest ocean and the height higher than the highest mountain. They care for us meticulously and their love for us is not hindered by hardship and danger. They have done so much without complaint and some even willing to die for their children. In return, the simple truth is to show gratitude by being filial to them and by doing so, we set a good example for our children and this in turn promotes greater harmony in the family. As children we must remember and understand these three considerations: 1]Who gives me this body? 2]Who brings me up? 3]Who gives me education? They are worried when we are near to the water, fire or hot and sharp object. Before they eat, they will ensure that we are not hungry. They would not sleep in peace if our safety is not assured. Once we had any illness, they do not blame us for being so difficult to raise. But instead, they will blame themselves for not taking good care of us. They will seek good doctor and gather medicinal herbs, pray to God and consult fortune teller. They wished that they can suffer on our behalf. If we are somewhere away and far from home, they will worry for us and wait for our return. If we return late, they will be anxious, wondering if any mishaps could have happened. All these are the kindness of our parents when they bear, nurture, foster, educate and treat us. All these kindness should not be forgotten by anyone of us. Confucius further said, “We must cherish our lives and every part of our body as they are given to us by our parents. This is the basis of being filial.
